Analog Input Module
Client: Allen-Bradley
Elsyn was the hardware and software designer of a high speed, high accuracy, eight channel analog input module for the Allen-Bradley SLC-500 small programmable controller (PLC). The SLC-500 1746-NI8 module reads eight analog voltage or current signals and outputs a formatted digital number to the SLC-500 processor.
Elsyn's involvement in the project began at the product definition stage and continued until final product manufacturing certification. Elsyn generated all specifications, test plans and documentation in accordance with Allen-Bradley's ISO-9000 requirements.
Elsyn was responsible for all of the hardware design, firmware design, hardware testing, firmware testing, and product functional testing. We successfully coordinated with Allen-Bradley's CAD and manufacturing departments to bring the product to market within product cost goals.
Elsyn was able to utilize innovative design techniques to improve module accuracy, speed, and the number of channels per module. Each input channel can be independently configured for voltage or current sensing for any of the following ranges.
Voltage Input Signal:
0 - 5V (0.1%)
1 - 5V (0.1%)
0 - 10V (0.1%)
-10V to +10V (0.1%)
Current Input Signal:
0 - 1mA (0.5%)
0 - 20mA (0.05%)
4 - 20mA (0.05%)
-20mA to +20mA (0.05%)
In addition, each channel can be independently configured to low pass filter the converted signals. Filter frequency options include 75 Hz, 50 Hz, 20 Hz, 10 Hz, 5 Hz, 2 Hz, 1 Hz, or "none." The selection of a filter frequency does not affect the per channel update time of 0.75 milliseconds.
Elsyn's involvement in the NI8 module project enables Allen-Bradley to offer its customers a significantly improved analog input module for their SLC-500 based control systems.
